Itinerary
Your holiday begins today as you arrive in Edinburgh independently and check in to our hotel where you are greeted by our Tour Manager. Afterwards, you're at leisure to start exploring Scotland's capital.
The heart of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the Old Town's Royal Mile and the New Town's award-winning Georgian architecture continuing the contrast between traditional and contemporary. As you admire the grand neoclassical buildings of the New Town or stroll up Calton Hill to view the National Monument of Scotland, modelled on the Greek Parthenon, it's easy to see why Edinburgh came to be regarded as the 'Athens of the North'. There are so many great sights to see in Edinburgh, from renowned museums to picturesque streets and the historic delights of the Royal Mile. Outside the National Museum of Scotland, you can find a small fountain commemorating Greyfriars Bobby, the terrier who guarded the grave of his owner for 14 years.
This evening, we gather at our central hotel for our first dinner together as a group.

Spectacular scenery. Great visits to castles and lochs. Excellent hotels, particularly in Glen Coe and Edinburgh. Good food. Super Tour Manager. Slight frustration was the coach driver who talked incessantly. Photos: Martin Sinnock

Beautiful scenery on the trains, busses, and ferries. The weather was perfect. Our tour guide and bus driver were both great. Made new friends. Love Edinburgh, Inverness, and Glasgow. My favorite was the Urquhart Castle ruins. Would definitely take another tour with Vacations by Rail.

We enjoyed the daily excursions and had a wonderful overview of the Highlands. Tracy Richards, our tour manager, did a great job getting us from place to place and informing us on what we needed to know about our travels. This is one of the best trips we've taken through Vacations by Rail.

1. The tour manager, Tracey Richards was excellent! The first coach driver, Davie, was also excellent. 2. Disappointed that the Steam Engine trains were not available to us but it seems we were there too early in the season - wish there was been earlier notification of this so we could have changed our date of travel. 3. Dinners were late for me - 7:00 - earlier would have been better. 4. Hotels were good 5. Sites chosen were good.
